Thank you for remaining interested in the continuing work at Meersbrook Hall. Since our last newsletter things have definitely moved on and are looking very positive. This issue covers the upcoming Clean Up weekend, the Heritage Open Days, the September picnic, the recent BBC press release and a daffodil whose origins appear to be in the Walled Garden!
Clean Up
Over the weekend of Friday, Saturday and Sunday 4/5/6 September we are rallying troops to join us to begin cleaning up the Hall. It’s been empty since 2023 so we have plenty of work on our hands.
The cleaning shifts will be:
Friday, Saturday and Sunday
11-1, 1-3, and 3-5
If you can join us for any of these slots that would be fantastic. We will provide all cleaning equipment including rubber gloves and face masks. We will provide refreshments. And more details closer to the date.

Heritage Open Days
On Friday 11th September and Friday 18th September 12.00 and 14.00 we will be running tours in the Hall. Our volunteer guides have been trained by local archaeologist Ken Dash who has also written a book titled ‘The Story of Meersbrook Hall’ which we hope to have for sale very soon. Picnic In The Park
The picnic on Sunday September 13th is now looking very exciting. We have lots of local music, arts and crafts, games, lots of children’s activities and the Walled Garden will be serving teas and coffees and cakes. Please come along and support us. It’s an opportunity to talk to experts about the Hall too.

The W.P. Milner Daffodil
While our local archaeologist Ken Das was surveying the Walled Garden in 2022 he came across some information about William Pashley Milner, including that he was a keen gardener and had a daffodil named after him.
It appears that William Pashley Milner’s daffodil was registered in 1869. He had been living in Meersbrook Hall since 1864, and it must have been cultivated in the Walled Garden. The small, graceful daffodil is a dwarf which is a trumpet and long cupped. It’s petals are pale yellow and creamy.

The Friends of Meersbrook Hall are working to try to keep Meersbrook Hall in public ownership and develop it in a way which benefits the local community and enhances the park.
