Heritage Open Days – Day 1 – Fully Booked

This is the story of Meersbrook Hall across more than two and a half centuries. It is the story of a Georgian mansion built for a Sheffield businessman, of the even richer family he sold the Hall to, of their involvement in bank fraud on a massive scale.

It’s the story of three sisters who never married but lived lives of quiet luxury in the Hall and their childhood playmate, one of the most famous women of Victorian Britain. It’s the story of a successful lawyer who was also an ardent botanist. It’s the story of a Victorian art collector and critic who was looking for somewhere to display his collection. It’s the story of a dedicated woman who lived there; a woman in a man’s world. It’s the story of a barrage balloon and a group of RAF men and women stationed there during the Second World War. It’s also the story of a small army of servants, gardeners, coachmen, cooks and maids who kept the building going through the years.

The Friends of Meersbrook Hall is working with Sheffield City Council on a plan to reopen the hall to the public after the hall was closed in 2023. Volunteer Guides have been trained by local archaeologist Len Dash who has written a new book ‘The Story of Meersbrook Hall’, which will be available to buy at the Heritage Open Days.
